Dedication Celebration
Sunday, August 28, 2011 This was the grand finale celebration for the 100th anniversary of the “The Cathedral of the Plains” dedication. The original dedication was on August 27, 1911.
To start the day, a Centennial Monument on the south side of the church plaza was unveiled and blessed by Bishops of the Dioceses at 9:30 a.m. A procession of bishops, priests, nuns, Mass servers, and various organizational representatives began the 10:00 a.m. Mass. The St. Fidelis Cathedral Choir, along with members of the Hays High Plains Barbershop Chorus, lead the congregation in singing traditional hymns and service music.
A meal offering German cuisine including noodles and beans, dumplings with sauerkraut and kielbasa, meatballs, and galuskies (pigs in the blanket) was served in the Victoria Grade School cafeteria and gymnasium, with a free will contribution suggested. Entertaining the crowd during the meal were Clowns for Jesus, a group of four clowns from Ellsworth and Kanopolis, Kansas, who shape balloon animals, paint faces, and make people laugh.
In the afternoon, the Hays High Plains Barbershop Chorus and Prairie Timbre Quartet entertained with barbershop harmonies in the church. They were followed by Opa’s One Man German Band. “Opa” is Larry Weigel, formerly of Hays, Kansas, and son of well-known Volga-German historian Lawrence Weigel. He sang songs about his ancestors including the kidnapping of his five times great-grandfather.
“Minute to Win It” games offering cash prizes for all age groups amused the crowd in the area south of the Grade School. Church artifacts and pictures reflecting various time periods of the church decorations were displayed along side a souvenir booth throughout the day.
